Google publishes exactly three factors for local ranking: relevance (how well your listing matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how established and trusted you look). Everything below is those three, made practical.
Start where the calls come from: your Business Profile
For most local businesses the Google Business Profile — the map listing — drives more calls than the website. It's also where most of your competitors are half-finished. That's the opportunity.
Get the category exactly right
Your primary category is the strongest single lever on the profile. "Website designer" ranks for different searches than "Marketing agency"; "Lawn care service" differs from "Landscaper." Pick the most specific category that describes your core money-maker, then add secondary categories for real supporting services — and resist stuffing loosely-related ones, which dilutes relevance.
Fill in every service, with words
Each service you add — with an actual description — gives Google more text to match searches against. "Water heater replacement," "French drain installation," "Sprinkler repair": these exact phrases are what customers type. Profiles listing 2 vague services lose to profiles listing 12 specific ones.
Set service areas like you mean them
Service-area businesses can list the towns they cover. "United States" is worthless — Google can't rank you everywhere, so it ranks you nowhere. List the 5–15 cities you genuinely serve. Then mirror them on your website with real pages (next section).
Stay visibly alive
Post most weeks. Add photos as work happens. Seed the Q&A with questions customers actually ask, and answer them. Respond to every review within a day or two. Google favors tended profiles — and so do the humans comparing you against the listing that last posted in 2023.
Your website's half of the job
The profile gets you considered; the website confirms you're real and extends your reach.
- Name your services and cities in actual page copy. Google connects "sprinkler repair Cedar Park" to businesses whose pages say those words. A homepage that says "quality solutions since 2009" says nothing Google can use.
- Build a page per city-service combination that matters — genuinely useful ones with local specifics, not copy-paste with the city name swapped. This is how you rank in towns beyond your shop's location. It's front three of the monthly plan.
- Be fast. Slow sites bleed the visitors the map sends and undercut prominence. Sub-second loads are achievable — that's a build question. See builders vs. custom.
- Add local schema markup. Structured data spelling out your business, services, areas, and FAQs — machine-readable trust that most small competitors skip.
Prominence: the slow compounding part
- Reviews, steadily. A simple habit — text the link after every happy job — outperforms bursts. Respond to all of them.
- Consistency everywhere. Your name, address, and phone must match exactly across Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, and the directories. Disagreement reads as unreliability.
- Real mentions. The chamber, the neighborhood association, a supplier's dealer page, the tournament you sponsor — legitimate local links beat any amount of purchased junk.
The mistakes that sink listings
- Keyword-stuffing your business name ("Smith Plumbing – Best Plumber Austin TX") — against guidelines, and Google suspends profiles for it. Suspension is weeks of appeals with your phone silent.
- Fake or bought reviews — filters catch more than people expect, and the penalty outlasts the boost.
- Set-and-forget — the profile that never posts slowly sinks under the ones being tended.
- Impatience — switching strategies every three weeks resets the compounding. The businesses that win pick the boring plan and run it for a year.
